How To Connect Multiple Facilities
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Patient Education can be extended from your facility to other hospitals and clinics with VideoCourier and connectivity.  As IT expands network connectivity between sister hospitals and clinics it becomes possible to share the patient education resources.
VideoCourier was developed by Synergy Broadcast Systems as a way to manage file sharing and distribute programming to remote locations, whether they are down the block or in another county.  What this means is that a single hospital can serve as a Media Center for multiple facilities by collecting patient education programming and making it available to other facilities in their network.  This saves staff resources since only one location is needed to focus on collecting, creating and distributing content.  All other locations can utilize the content from the Media Center to use with in-patients, out-patients and staff.  Your investment in equipment is also reduced in the remote locations since collection and duplication equipment is not needed.
To learn more about VideoCourier and the outreach possibilities please contact your Region Manager at 800-601-6991.
How to Avoid Common Errors
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's never good when an event does not play for a patient.  We receive a few calls each month about random errors.  In most cases we find there was a logical reason the error occured and could have been avoided.  The most common errors we see are:
  1. The Phone Program is not running.  It's usually turned off by accident when being minimized.  When it's closed it cannot answer a call and will usually just ring.  Make sure this program is always running so the patient's call is answered.
  2. The CG Program is not running.  This applies to sites using either Interactive CG's or CG's that auto-update.  If this program is not running the CG cannot communicate with the system.
  3. The Digital Server or Flatman program is not running.  Digital Server is used to communicate between the VOD software and the Server and Flatman is used to communicate between the tape robot and the software.
  4. The file path is incorrect.  This is the link between the MSN and the actual file in the Server Storage.  To avoid this you must use the browse  button in the MSN window and go through the network to the actual location in D:Storage.

Note: You can tell if any of the programs listed above are running if they are visible in the tool tray at the bottom of the computer screen.  If a program is missing it simply needs to be re-started.

In-House Broadcast Network
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Emergency preparedness is a common phrase we hear today that we did not hear very much before 9/11 and Katrina.  This not only applies to the readiness of your hospital but also how you communicate with staff and patients as well as guests and out-patients.  As with all emergency oriented solutions they only work if they are in place before they are needed.
Most hospitals have multiple waiting rooms, lounges, entry ways and even food service areas.  Add to that, the number of nurses' stations, staff lounges and office space and you soon realize that communication with that many people could be impossible.
Today it is possible to create your own In-House Broadcast Network (also known as Digital Signage) that can be used to communicate with everyone in your building or campus in all of the common gathering areas.  Providing daily communication and updates in this manner is a great way to make sure staff, patients and guests are informed and it can be used to promote your facility to visitors.  Importantly, this network can be totally separated from your existing patient television system but they can share common information and in some cases common software and equipment.
Everyday communication can include updates on meetings, activities, special events, gift shop and food service hours, visiting hours, profiles on hospital staff and information on new services or hospital features and seasonal health advice as well as up-to-date news and weather.  For staff members the In-House Network can be directed to "staff only" locations and provide work schedules, meeting updates, employee announcements, education and training schedules, news and weather and other important information.  It can also be used to carry "live" announcements and staff meetings.
If an emergency situation should arise the In-House Network can provide emergency information such as weather alerts, information from Homeland Security, Hospital security, evacuation plans and live updates or announcements from hospital management.  Emergency messages can be updated quickly by regular staffers.  No need for special training or system knowledge.  If they can use a web browser they can update the system.
If you are interested in learning how an In-House Broadcast Network can work for your facility please give us a call at 800-601-6991.  We provide several options for In-House Broadcast Networks that can help take the worry out of planning and managing this type of communication.
Healthcentral.com is a health related web site that offers up-to-date tips on a wide variety of health related issues.  This web site features Dr. Dean Edell, one of the very first "media doctors" who began broadcasting back in 1978 on KGO Radio in San Francisco.  This web site is "ad supported" but appears to have some valuable information as well as an email newsletter.
