| LogInspector
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Errorlog.exe has been modified and is now called LogInspector. This change was made with VLM Version 2.77 and is designed to help you better identify problems by providing a log viewer that is easier to read. In the new LogInspector we do the following:
-
Save the current log when the application exits so you can always go back to investigate a problem.
- Save the current log from the log tab before clearing when it needs to make room for new entries.
- Purge old log files.
To access the LogInspector:
1. Keyboard short cut is Alt+L.
2. In the log tab of the application, use the right button context menu item called "System Log Files".
3. In VLM, you can right click in the log tab or use the Menu approach which is View->System Log Files.
LogInspector can help you identify reasons for problems and deepen your understanding of the system and how it works. Two calls we received last week help illustrate this: The first caller said the Server missed a scheduled play and he could not figure out why. We checked the LogInspector and found this message: "MSN Does not Exist on the Server". This meant the file was not loaded on the server and would have shown up as Missing Media. The second illustration is a very common call we receive about missed encodes. In checking the log file in LogInspector the message was: "Drive D is full". If the drive is full there is no room for the file on the Encoder's hard drive so the file could not be encoded. The lesson here is to check the available storage in the Encoder periodically to make sure there is room on the hard drive.
LogInspector is a stand-alone application. It saves logs in text format in a subfolder called "Logs" where the program executable resides. If you don't feel comfortable viewing these logs or have some issues that need more attention please call Field Service for assistance. |
Smart Phones and Remote Access
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you've ever found yourself away from the station and received an error page from the system or been called to make an update but you didn't have your laptop, consider upgrading to a Smart Phone. I'm specifically refering to Palm and Windows Mobile phones with Web Access and VPN software. Using a Palm Smart Phone or Windows Mobile you can access the system's desktop to interface with any of the devices or components and you can also update projects on Informa, BugCrawler and FireBird with our recently announced InformaWeb application.
InformaWeb is a web based interface that provides the ability to select a project or template, update the text and publish the project. You can use it from your office computer, home computer, laptop and Smart Phone. In addition to your own use you can provide other departments with this same access so they can update their projects without requesting station assistance thus saving your staff valuable time and effort. School and business delays and closings, class schedule updates, traffic or utility issues, emergency announcements, weather warnings, meeting changes and postponements are just a few of the types of notifications and alerts that can be updated and triggered.

| IPTV and Streaming Options
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ IPTV is becoming more popular these days and with some Cable Access channels losing funding and channel capacity IPTV is a way to get back on air so your viewers can see your programming on the Internet rather than cable TV. If your organization has an interest in IPTV options we can help you. SBS offers three options for Web Access: (1) Simulcast your broadcast signal; (2) Run a totally separate IPTV channel with VLM and our MediaServer; and (3) Provide your viewers with Video On Demand capability. For more information please contact your Region Manager. |
